Two Weeks Since We Haz Sadz

Well, it’s been two weeks since Sam moved on to the ”Majestic Catnip Field in the Sky”, as Claire so eloquently put it.  Down here on the Range, things are settling down and returning to what passed for normal a year or so ago.  But with some differences.

We’re now running two head of catbox.  Thoz Boyz kind of got used to scattering their biddness around, so we’ve left that in place.  The good news is that the Poopingtons don’t have the paint peeling capabilities that Sam used to such success.  And they’re quite good about burying said biddness, something Sam never mastered.

F. Bobbie is slowly coming to realize that he is, in fact, not a god.  Sam kind of spoiled him in that regard.  None of the rest of the herd, or his spouse, for that matter, looks at F. Bobbie with quite the adoration that Sam did.  None of us worship the ground he walks on and there’s definitely no drooling while being brushed.  Poor F. Bobbie — a mere mortal.

Without the Big Grumpy Guy around, the Poopingtons are much more playful and want to interact with us a lot more.  Cupola is my alarm clock most mornings, sitting on the bed, watching me.  When I finally open my eyes, he meows at me around his purr, which kind of sounds like a chirp.  Hinkey can be frequently found tormenting a rattly mouse and the other morning, there was fun-filled stalking of the brother-without-a-clue.  I nearly snorted cereal milk out my nose.

On the flip side, Hinkey is being a real badass right now and kind of picking on Coop.  The other day, they were each on a different level of the kitty condo and Hinkey was doing that snorty aggression thing and looking seriously at Coop’s dangling tail.  Coop took the weenie way out and bailed.  And his bald spots aren’t filling in as quickly as I’d like.  I think Hinkey’s ’tude is stressing out the silly goombaw.

So, all in all, life goes on.

Now, what to do about the name of this blog…

And Now For Something Completely Different…

Not Herd-related, but I wanted to point y’all to some of  the other entertaining animals out there.

First up, an elk calf having a great time in a mud puddle.

Then there’s this dancing bear.  The music is key, so be sure to turn you speakers on.

And of course, there’s the ground squirrel that became a star of the interwebs.

That is all.

Nano – Day… What Day Is It?

Ah, the best-laid plans of mice and men…

Today was a holiday (here’s a shout out to all you vets out there!) and to extend the fun, I took yesterday off, wishing, dreaming, hoping that I would be able to put two 5,000-word days together.  Well, I did it yesterday.  Went to a write-in downtown at Dreamers, one of my favorite coffee shops which is, alas and alack, closing down on Sunday.  Met two other Nano-nians and cranked out 2500 words with the help of two enormous coffees and all those interesting characters walking by on the street.

Then, later in the evening, I retired to the library for a few hours and cranked out another 2500 words.  A most excellent, but exhausting day.  I’m not used to creatively writing for five hours a day.  That stuff I do at work does NOT count!

So today, I was hoping to do the same thing – butt in chair = 5000 words.  SO did not happen.  I fiddle foo’d around, vacuumed, read a book, played with the Herd, did the grocery shopping and generally did just about anything I could do in order to avoid sitting down and getting my 1667 words in.  Now, here it is, late in the evening, and I finally buckled down and cranked out the minimum words  in an hour and a quarter.

Oh well.  Better late than never.  There’s always this weekend to get 10,000 words…
